Traditional Subject - New Approach - Paula Henchell article in Leisure Painter Magazine

Leisure Painter is a very popular and unique art magazine in which you are invited to follow along the the creative process from conception to completion. By following the step-by-step process you will learn about my technique and how accidents can sometimes lead to new beginnings. Enjoy.

Excerpt form the article:

"For many years I have painted in watercolour in a traditional manner, using mainly transparent colours. In fact, my entire watercolour palette contained only three opaque colour: Naples yellow, cadmium yellow and cadmium red light. Making the transition from this to mixed-media approach came about by accident. I had been painting yellow hibiscus flowers in watercolour on a very dark background of alizarin crimson and phthalo green (which make a fantastic rich dark) when the dark paint ran into the wet yellow and I couldn't take it out. I'd spent a lot of time painting the foliage and didn't feel like throwing the painting away. So, I asked myself what would happen if I layered gesso on the flowers and started again?"

This is the first part of the article. The second part is coming soon.
